We come out to Elyria from Parma, about 40 minutes each way. Many houses there date from the 1960s and four in ten are rented, so we plan for both.

Elyria grew up around the forks of the Black River, and it's still the county seat of Lorain County. Whether you live near the old courthouse downtown or out by Midway Mall, the street ZIP is the same, 44035.

It's about 25 miles from our base, so we make the trip count. Call with the brand and the problem, and if the model tag is easy to reach, read it to us. A lot of the time that means the right part is already on the van.

Elyria ZIP codes and the city water

  • 44035all street addresses
  • 44036PO boxes only

Houses and apartments in Elyria all sit in 44035. The other Elyria ZIP, 44036, belongs to post office boxes, so for a visit we need the street address. Parts of 44035 spill past the city line, which doesn't bother us. We go by the street.

Elyria runs its own water plant and draws from Lake Erie. We couldn't read a hardness number off the city's water report, so we won't guess one. Whatever it is, a dishwasher or a fridge valve that's been on the same water for 20 years will have some buildup. When cubes shrink or the dishwasher fills slowly, the inlet valve is one of the first things we check.

Owning a rental in Elyria

Four in ten Elyria homes are rented, per the Census. If one of them is yours, you don't need to drive over for a dead stove. Give us the tenant's number and yours. We set the time with the tenant and call you with the diagnosis and price. Nothing gets done until you say go.

You'll also hear what actually broke. Handy when you're deciding if a 15-year-old fridge deserves one more part.

Renting and the fridge died

Call your landlord first, or the management office. In most leases the appliance belongs to them, and so does the bill. Our guide to rental appliance repairs explains who usually pays for what in Ohio. If the owner asks you to book us, we just need their OK on the price.

Washers in older basements

Half the houses in Elyria were built before 1967, Census data says. Houses that age usually keep the washer downstairs, by a floor drain and a laundry tub.

  1. Mind the floor drainWasher pumps out, drain gurgles, water creeps back across the floor. Honestly? Could be the house, not the washer. Fill the laundry tub, pull the plug and watch. If that drains slow too, call a plumber before you call us.
  2. Check the outletPlenty of old basement outlets have no ground wire. Washer keeps tripping the breaker? Get an electrician to look at the outlet first. Then us, for the machine.
  3. Look at the hosesBlack rubber fill hoses go brittle in five years or so. Still got the originals? Braided steel ones cost a few bucks and don't burst.
  4. Note the stairsMost repairs happen right there in the basement. But if something has to come upstairs, tell us about that tight turn by the landing. Better now than halfway up.

Drum won't spin, or the water won't leave? That's on our washer repair page.

Dryer vents that snake through old basements

Nobody in 1965 planned a basement around a modern dryer. So the vent wanders around the furnace and the ductwork before it finds its way out through the rim joist. Every bend and every foot of flexible foil holds lint. Heat's fine. The wet air just can't get out, and jeans need two runs.

Start outside. With the dryer on high, the flap should push open hard. Barely moving? Get the duct cleaned or shortened, with rigid metal wherever it fits. Then if drying is still slow, call us and we'll test the heater and the thermostats. The article on clothes staying wet goes through it step by step.

Ranges and fridges in 1960s kitchens

Small kitchens built for the appliances of their day. Modern machines fit, mostly, with a few catches.

Gas range that won't light

On a newer range, the igniter has to glow hot enough to open the gas valve. A weak one glows, clicks and nothing happens. That's a common, cheap part.

Fridge squeezed into a nook

Older cabinets leave little air space. Squeeze a fridge in tight and it can't shed heat. It runs and runs. Give it an inch and vacuum the coils.

Oven running cold

Bake elements don't always go out with a bang. If it looks blistered or has a gap, that's your answer. If not, we test the sensor next.

For gas cooking trouble, see range repair. Our article on appliances in older homes covers wiring and venting too.

Elyria repair questions

Which Elyria ZIP codes do you serve?

All of 44035, which covers every street address in the city and some just outside it. 44036 is for post office boxes, so for a house call we need the street.

How soon can you get to Elyria?

It's about 40 minutes from Parma. Ring before ten on a weekday and today is often still possible. Later calls get the earliest opening we really have.

I own a rental in Elyria. Can you deal with my tenant?

Yes. We set the time with the tenant and send the price to you. No work starts until you approve it.

My tenant says the oven is broken. Do I need to be there?

No. Someone has to let us in, usually the tenant. You get the call with the diagnosis and the number before we go ahead.

My basement washer is from the 2000s. Fix it or not?

Often it is. Pumps and lid switches are cheap on older top-loaders. A cracked tub or a bad transmission usually isn't worth it, and we'll say that plainly.

What does appliance repair cost in Elyria?

The price depends on the fault and the part. You hear the full number after the diagnosis and before any work. Veterans and seniors get $30 off, a first visit $20 off, one discount per visit.

Do you fix restaurant equipment in Elyria?

Yes. If the walk-in is drifting warm or the pizza oven won't hold temperature, call us. We can come before you open.
