It's about 4.6 miles from our place in Parma to the center of Seven Hills. Twelve minutes, give or take. Independence is over to the east, and Broadview Heights is south of you. Broadview Road takes us most of the way in.

There's no real downtown here. Seven Hills is houses, pretty much end to end. Census numbers say about 95 percent of them are lived in by the people who own them. That shapes how we work here, and you'll see why below.

When you have owned the house for decades

Folks in Seven Hills tend to stay put. The median age in town is around 52, and a lot of people have been in the same house since the kids were small. So the appliances have stories. Maybe it's a washer that hasn't left the basement in thirty years. Or a garage fridge that used to be the kitchen one.

We like fixing those. Older machines were often simpler, and a belt or a switch still gets them going. But we won't pretend. If the part's discontinued or the repair costs more than the thing is worth, you'll hear it from the technician, not after the bill.

Seniors get $30 off, and so do veterans. Mention it when you call. It's one discount per visit, but nobody has to ask twice.

Keeping an older appliance going longer

None of this needs tools. It's the stuff we wish more people did before we got the call.

  1. Vacuum the fridge coilsOnce or twice a year, pull the bottom grille or roll the fridge out. Dusty coils make the compressor work harder, and that's the part you really don't want to replace.
  2. Swap the washer hosesRubber fill hoses older than five years or so are a gamble. Braided steel ones cost a few dollars more and don't burst the same way.
  3. Look at the dryer vent outsideRun the dryer and feel the flap on the outside wall. If it barely moves, the duct's full of lint. That's a fire risk, not just a slow dryer.
  4. Listen for new noisesA squeal or a grinding sound that wasn't there last month is worth a call. A worn bearing is cheaper than the motor it takes out.

We go deeper in our appliance maintenance guide and in the article on repair versus replacement.

The second fridge in the garage

A lot of houses here have an extra fridge or a chest freezer out in the garage. Most of them aren't built for a cold Ohio winter. When the garage drops near freezing, the fridge thermostat thinks it's cold enough and stops running. Then the freezer section warms up. If your garage freezer goes soft every January, that's likely why. Our freezer repair page explains more.

Calling for your parents

Sometimes the call comes from a son or daughter who lives elsewhere. That's fine. Give us your number and theirs, and tell us who approves the price. We'll call the house before we arrive and explain the repair to whoever's home.

Seven Hills mail and the 44131 code

  • 44131Seven Hills, OH

Seven Hills uses 44131. The post office's main name for that ZIP is actually Independence, which surprises people. Use Seven Hills or Independence on the form, both get to us.

On the Parma side of town some streets carry a Parma ZIP instead. If that's you, book the same way. Our Parma home page covers those streets too.

Something gave out this morning

Twelve minutes away means we can often fit you in the same day if you call early. Technicians work Monday to Friday and Sunday until 11 pm. You can leave a request on Saturday and we'll get back to you.

Fridge warm, freezer fine

Usually a defrost problem or a stuck fan. Keep the doors shut and move milk and meat to the freezer side for now.

Washer won’t drain

Don’t open a front-loader that’s full. Turn it off and we’ll drain it on site.

Burning smell from anything

Unplug it or flip the breaker. Don’t run it again until it’s been looked at.

Do you give a senior discount in Seven Hills?

Yes. Seniors save $30 and veterans get the same. First-time customers get $20 off. Only one discount applies per visit.

What ZIP code is Seven Hills, Ohio?

44131, which it shares with Independence. Some streets near Parma have a Parma ZIP. We cover both, so just book with your usual address.

Is it worth fixing a 20-year-old washer?

Sometimes. If it's a simple top-loader with a worn belt or a bad pump, a repair often makes sense. If the transmission or the tub is gone, a new washer is usually smarter. The technician gives you the number and lets you decide.

My garage freezer quits every winter. Why?

Many fridges and freezers aren't rated for a cold garage. Below a certain temperature they stop cycling. Some models have a garage kit or are built for it. We can check yours and tell you what it's rated for.

Can I book a repair for my parent who lives in Seven Hills?

Of course. Leave both phone numbers and say who okays the price. We'll ring the house before the technician pulls up.

Are parts still around for a Kenmore from the nineties?

Usually. Kenmore never built its own machines. Most of them came from Whirlpool or other big makers, so the model number usually leads to a part that's still sold. Read us the full number off the tag and we'll check before coming out.

Do I need to empty the fridge before you come?

Not completely. Clear the bottom shelf and the crisper drawers so we can reach the back panel. If the freezer section has to come apart, we'll ask you to move things into a cooler.

How soon can you get to Seven Hills?

We're about 12 minutes away in Parma. Early weekday calls often get a visit that afternoon. Later calls get the first good slot after that.
