KitchenAid dishwasher repaired under a granite countertop

Dishwashers tend to let you down in one of three ways. Water sits in the bottom after the cycle. The dishes come out with food still stuck on. Or there's a puddle in front of the door. Dishwasher repair in Parma covers built-in and portable machines, and we reach Cleveland and the nearby suburbs too. Before quoting, we look at the drain path and the spray arms. The door seal gets a look too.

Open the cabinet under your sink and you'll probably see the drain hose looping up high and running into the disposal. That's the dishwasher's only way out. A clogged disposal backs up right into the tub, and the dishwasher gets the blame.

What goes wrong with dishwashers

Water left in the bottom

A pool in the tub after a finished cycle means the water can't get out, or the pump isn't pushing it.

Filter

Lift out the lower rack and look at the round filter in the floor of the tub. Packed with gunk and old lemon seeds? Twist it out and rinse it under the faucet.

Drain pump and check valve

Clean filter and the water still sits there? Then it's the pump or the little check valve after it. That part's for us.

Drain hose and disposal

Just put in a new garbage disposal? Its knockout plug may still be in place, and nothing can drain past it.

Dishes come out dirty or wet

Spray arms

The arms have tiny holes, and hard water scale and seeds plug them up. Then the top rack barely gets wet.

Wash motor or heating

Lukewarm water at the end of the wash points to the heater. A spray you can barely hear points to the wash motor.

Rinse aid

A lot of newer dishwashers count on rinse aid to dry plastics. Empty dispenser, wet containers.

Our article on dishes that come out wet or dirty goes further, and hard water damage covers cloudy glasses.

Leaks under the cabinet

A dishwasher leak can soak the subfloor for weeks before anything shows. Switch it off, then pull the plug or flip its breaker. The little water valve almost always sits in the sink cabinet, way in the back, so close that too. Then give us a call.

Door gasket

A gasket that's worn flat or twisted out of its channel lets water run out along the bottom of the door.

Inlet valve and supply line

Drips while the dishwasher is off? An inlet valve stuck partly open is likely. A cracked supply line does it too.

Pump seal or hose clamp

Water shows up under the tub only while it drains? We usually find a pump seal that's given up, or a hose clamp that walked off its fitting.

Our dishwasher leak guide has the rest.

Quick checks before booking

  1. Rinse the filterTwist the filter out from under the lower rack and hold it under the tap. Two minutes, tops.
  2. Run the sink firstLet the kitchen faucet run until the water comes out hot, and give the disposal a few seconds.
  3. Spin the spray armsFlick each arm with a finger. It should spin freely. A stuck arm washes one stripe of dishes and nothing else.

Water temperature matters more than you'd guess. Detergent does its best work hot, and in an old house the kitchen can be a long pipe run away from the water heater. The first few minutes come in lukewarm. Glasses looking worse in January than in July? Tell us that on the phone.

Detergent, suds and loading

Some dishwasher problems need no part at all. Out of detergent and tempted by the dish soap by the sink? Don't. A squirt of that fills the tub with foam that pours out the door. Too much powder in soft water leaves grit on everything. And one tall roasting pan in the lower rack can stop the spray arm cold, or keep the detergent cup from popping open.

Trouble started the same week you switched brands or rearranged how you load? Run one cycle the old way before booking.

Pods go in the detergent cup. Tossed loose in the tub, they melt during the prewash and most of the soap goes down the drain before the real wash starts.

Turn the dirty face of each plate toward the middle, where the spray hits hardest. Check that the silverware basket isn't hanging down in the arm's path.

Fix it or buy a new dishwasher?

Usually worth fixing

Pumps and inlet valves are reasonable repairs on most dishwashers. Door latches, gaskets and spray arms are too.

Sometimes not

A rusted tub or a dead control board on an older unit may not be worth it. The technician shows you why before you spend a dime.

If buying new is the smarter move, we can come back and put the new one in.

Dishwashers we service

  • Built-in
  • Portable
  • Dish drawers
  • Commercial dish machines

Our dishwasher repair service works on Bosch and KitchenAid dishwashers all the time. GE and Whirlpool too. Frigidaire and Samsung show up often as well. Customers in Cleveland neighborhoods and Strongsville call us for these.

That cloudy film on every glass? Usually hard water. Keep the rinse aid topped up and run a cleaner through once a month, and it often fades.

Dishwasher questions

Standing water, spots on glasses and leaks.

(216) 352-3935

Why is there water in the bottom of my dishwasher?

Start with the filter. If it's clean, the drain pump or check valve is next. A kinked hose or a blocked disposal can also hold water back, so run the disposal before you call.

Why are my dishes still dirty?

Often the spray arms are plugged. Water that isn't hot enough is another cause, and so is hard water film. Our wet or dirty dishes guide lists the checks.

Why does my dishwasher leak?

The door gasket is the most common spot. Inlet valves and pump seals leak too. Turn off the water and the power and book a visit.

Repair or replace a dishwasher?

For pumps and valves, usually repair. Same for latches and gaskets. A rusted tub or a dead board on an old unit often isn't worth it, and we tell you before any charge.

Can you install a new dishwasher?

Yes. When a repair doesn't make sense, we can come back and put in the new one.

Why won't my dishwasher start?

Check that the door latches with a click. Look for a lock symbol on the panel, since many have a child lock. Then check the breaker. Panel lights up but nothing runs? The latch switch or the board may be bad.

Why does my dishwasher smell?

Food stuck in the filter and the drain, or water sitting in the bottom. Rinse the filter, then run the dishwasher empty on its hottest setting with a cleaner tablet in it.
