Front-load washer opened up for repair

Avon's a bit of a haul for us, no point pretending otherwise. You're over in Lorain County, twenty-two miles or so from our Parma base. Figure 37 minutes when I-90 isn't backed up. That's still well inside the fifty-mile ring we cover. It just changes how we prepare.

So before anybody gets in the van, we'll ask for three things. Brand plus model number. Whatever the display is showing. And what you were doing when it quit. Armed with that, our guy usually shows up holding the part you need. One visit beats two for everybody.

A town that doubled in twenty years

In 2000 Avon counted about 11,400 residents. Twenty years later? Nearly 25,000. That's a lot of new driveways. Census data pegs the median Avon house at 2001, younger than almost any town we serve. When subdivisions go up that fast, the builder tends to drop the same appliance package into house after house.

Fast forward and those appliances are fifteen to twenty-five. At that age it's usually the electronics that go flaky, not the motors. Control boards. Door locks. The tiny sensors watching water levels. Lucky for you, most of them flash a code before dying outright. A code is half a diagnosis.

Laundry on the second floor? Get a drain pan under that washer if there isn't one already. Then swap the rubber fill hoses for braided steel. A hose that bursts upstairs soaks drywall and ceilings, which is a whole other bill.

Error codes we see on newer machines

First rule, snap a picture of the code before pulling the plug. Some machines wipe their memory the second they lose power. Below are three codes you might run into on newer machines.

OELG washer

LG's drain complaint. Water's stuck or crawling out. Pop the little access door down low on the front and clean out the pump filter (towels ready). Still stuck? Then it's the pump or a kinked hose.

F5 E3Whirlpool washer

The washer can't confirm its door is locked. Every so often the culprit is a sock pinched in the seal. Otherwise the lock assembly is wearing out. Our F5 E3 article walks through it.

E15Bosch dishwasher

Bosch found water in the base pan and shut itself off on purpose. Tipping it to dump the water might clear the code for a day. The leak is still there. That's what we hunt for.

Codes aren't gospel, by the way. A drain code can come from a pump that's fine but a hose that's kinked behind the machine. A lock code sometimes means the wiring harness rubbed through where the door flexes. So the code is only where we start. We test the actual part before quoting you a dime.

See an LG washer flashing tE instead? That's a heating fault, explained in our LG tE article.

Getting ready for a visit from Parma

  1. Hunt down the model numberIt's on a sticker somewhere, usually inside a door or under a lid. Snap a photo of the whole sticker, not just the number, since the serial tells us the build year.
  2. Photograph the codeMemory gets fuzzy. Was it 5E or SE? A phone picture settles it.
  3. Clear the wayMove the laundry baskets and kid stuff from in front of the machine. Fish out the soggy clothes too, if you can stand it.

ZIP 44011 and the west side neighbors

  • 44011Avon, OH

All of Avon is 44011, and that ZIP doesn't reach into other towns. The city of Avon owns and maintains its water mains but buys the water itself from its neighbor's utility, Avon Lake Regional Water. For us that changes nothing. A washer leak inside your house is still about the valves right behind the machine.

Avon became a city in 1961, though most of what you see today is much newer. Settlers arrived in 1814, and a few historic houses like the Wilbur Cahoon House on the National Register still stand a short drive from brand-new cul-de-sacs. An old range in a century home and a 2018 smart fridge are simply different conversations.

Coming from Parma we pass through Westlake. Our Westlake repair page covers that side.

Avon repair questions

About the drive, codes and newer homes.

Do you really come to Avon from Parma?

Yes. It's about 37 minutes and twenty-two miles, well inside our fifty-mile service area.

My washer shows a code. Should I unplug it?

Write the code down or take a photo first. Some machines lose it after a power cut. Then unplug it if it's leaking or smells hot.

My house was built around 2005. Are the original appliances worth fixing?

Usually. Those parts are stocked widely for models of that age. Should the bill creep toward the price of a replacement, we'll flag it before touching anything.

Can I get a same-day repair in Avon?

Sometimes. Since it's a longer drive, call early. Otherwise we book the next open slot.

My upstairs washer leaked into the ceiling. What now?

Close both taps behind the machine and pull the plug. After that, ring us so we can track down the leak. For water damage in the ceiling, you may also need a restoration company.

Can you fix a Wi-Fi connected appliance that stopped talking to the app?

Sometimes the fix is just a router change or a reset. When the appliance itself works but the app doesn't, try the maker's support line first. If the machine itself misbehaves too, that part is our department.

Why does my newer dryer stop before the clothes are dry?

Most newer dryers use moisture sensor bars inside the drum. Fabric softener film coats them and fools the dryer into thinking the load is done. Wipe the two metal strips with rubbing alcohol. Still quitting early? Then the sensor or the board needs a look.

Which Avon ZIP do you cover?

All of 44011. It covers the whole city.
