Tallmadge is laid out around the Circle. The Historic Tallmadge Church in the middle went up in 1825, and eight roads go out from it like spokes on a wheel. Northwest Avenue heads northwest, you get the idea. Whichever spoke you live off, we'll find you.

It's roughly 36 miles from our Parma base. On a clear road that's just under an hour, so we'd rather not show up and find out we need a part we left behind. A good description on the phone goes a long way.

Akron water in Tallmadge

Tallmadge doesn't have its own water source. The city's 2025 water report says it buys from Akron. Akron in turn pulls from Lake Rockwell and a few reservoirs upstream on the Cuyahoga.

Lake and river water, in other words, so scale creeps in slowly. Still, a dishwasher that's never had its filter pulled will gunk up eventually. Ten minutes once a month keeps it running clean. Pop the filter out from under the bottom rack and rinse it under the tap. If the mesh looks grey, an old toothbrush takes care of it.

Laundry rooms in Tallmadge basements

Houses from around 1971 often put the washer and dryer downstairs, next to the furnace and the water heater. That's a fine spot until something leaks. Basement floors slope toward a drain, mostly, but not always the way you'd like.

Two things worth doing while you're down there. Look at the hoses on the back of the washer. If they're plain black rubber and you don't know how old they are, swap them for braided steel. Then follow the dryer duct to the wall and check that it isn't that thin white foil stuff, crushed behind the machine. That kind traps lint and gets hot. Stop the cycle first. Then reach behind and turn both taps off, and get towels on the floor before it soaks in.

Fridge warming up

Quit opening it. After a few warm hours, the milk and the meat go in a cooler with ice.

Gas smell

Everybody out. Phone 911 or your gas company from the yard, and we come once they've cleared it.

Is Tallmadge too far out for you?

No. Our area stretches about 50 miles from Parma, and Tallmadge is inside it. The drive is a bit under an hour, so a morning call helps us get there the same day.

Does it matter which side of the Circle I live on?

Not for us. Every road in 44278 is covered, including the part of town that's in Portage County. Just give us the street and the nearest spoke road. If you're on a newer cul-de-sac the GPS doesn't know yet, a landmark helps.

Is my old chest freezer worth fixing?

Often it is. If it's a start relay or a thermostat, that's a cheap part and an hour of work. If the compressor is gone, a new freezer usually makes more sense. We'll say so.
