Richfield Appliance Repair
Richfield is one of the closer Summit County towns for us, under half an hour from Parma. Some homes here drink Cleveland Water and some pump their own, and that changes how appliances age.
One discount per visit. Mention it when you book.
Halfway between Cleveland and Akron sits a village of about 3,700 people. If you grew up around here, you probably still say “the Coliseum” when Richfield comes up. The Cavs played there until 1994. These days Brecksville Road is the spine of the place, and Wheatley Road crosses it.
It's roughly 15 miles from our Parma base, under half an hour on a clear road. That makes Richfield one of the easier Summit County trips for us. Get us on the phone early on a weekday and a visit that afternoon is a real possibility. The whole 44286 area counts, village or not.
Cleveland Water or a private well
Here's something odd about Richfield. Local reporting says Cleveland Water ran one main line down Brecksville Road for more than 25 years, and most of the village beyond it relied on private wells. Cleveland Water has been expanding since. So your neighbor's water and yours might not be the same water at all.
Treated Lake Erie water, about 7 grains per gallon by the utility's own number. Moderately hard, and the same from one tap to the next. Rinse aid plus a fridge filter every six months covers most of what it does to appliances.
Every well is its own animal. Some are hard, some carry iron, some send up fine grit. Heaters and valves take the hit first, and you'll often see orange or white crust long before anything fails.
Can't remember which you have? A bill from Cleveland Water settles it. So does a big blue or gray pressure tank in the basement, which means well.
Small habits for well-water homes
Nothing fancy. These just stretch the life of the valves and heaters a well is hardest on.
- Pull the inlet screensUnscrew the fill hoses at the back of the washer and you'll see little mesh cups. Grit from a well piles up in there. If the tub takes forever to fill, start here.
- Change fridge filters soonerSix months is the city-water number. On a well, plenty of filters are done in three. Slow dispenser, change it.
- Treat the dishwasher monthlyA citric acid cleaner on an empty hot cycle, once a month or so. White chalk on the racks says you're due.
- Bleed the air after an outageNo power means no well pump. When it comes back, the lines spit air. Open a kitchen faucet till it runs smooth before the ice maker and washer try to fill.
We go deeper on scale in how hard water hurts dishwashers and washers.
One ZIP, a village and its surroundings

ZIP 44286 is bigger than the village, which covers about 9 square miles. It reaches past the village line, and we treat every address in it the same.
Half the houses here were built before 1973. Most have had a new kitchen since, sometimes two. The wiring and the drains behind the cabinets, though, are usually the originals. So when a brand new dishwasher won't drain, we look at the disposal knockout and the trap before we blame the dishwasher.
About one home in seven is rented. Tenants can call us; the owner signs off on the price.
Repairs that tend to follow hard water
Dishwasher not heating
Crust on the element works like a blanket. It runs hot underneath and finally burns out. Wet dishes and very long cycles come first. See dishwasher repair.
Washer slow to fill
Plugged screens, or a fill valve that's scaled shut halfway. Cheap part, quick swap.
Ice maker with tiny cubes
Half-blocked valve or a filter that gave up early. On a well you'll meet this one sooner.
Dryer taking two cycles
Not a water problem, but we see it everywhere. A long vent run packed with lint is the usual cause, then a weak heater.
Water dispenser dribbling
Same thing, earlier in the line. We test the valve before we touch anything inside the door.
Got iron in the water? Stains in the ice tray or a rusty line in the dishwasher are the giveaway. A filter on the house supply helps the appliances more than any part we can fit.
Do you cover all of Richfield, including the township?
Yes. Everything in ZIP 44286 is on our route, village or township.
How far is Richfield from you?
About 15 miles, so under half an hour from Parma when traffic cooperates. If you reach us in the morning, there's a good chance we come by later that day.
I have a well. Is that bad for my appliances?
Not bad, just different. Sediment and minerals reach the valves and heaters sooner. Clean the inlet screens and keep filters fresh. If the water is hard, a softener pays for itself.
Can Richfield businesses book you?
Yes. Commercial coolers and ice machines included. We work around your hours.
My ice has an orange tint. Is the fridge broken?
Usually not. That's iron from a well. Change the fridge filter, and think about an iron filter for the house. If the ice maker also slows down, the inlet valve may be fouled. That's a part we replace.
The power was out and now the washer won't fill. Why?
On a well, air gets into the lines when the pump stops. Run a faucet until the spitting stops, then try the washer again. If it still won't fill, call us.
Can you tell whether my well water is wearing out the dishwasher?
Often, yes. When we open it up, scale on the heater and the spray arms tells the story. We'll show you what we find and suggest whether a softener or a filter is worth testing for.
What does it cost?
We find the fault first and quote a single price for parts and labor. Then you choose. Veterans and seniors knock $30 off. First-timers get $20 off, though discounts don't stack.
