F5E3 on a Whirlpool washer is a door lock error. Some displays show it as F5 E3 and it means the same thing. On front-loaders Whirlpool's help pages say the door isn't locking properly. On top-loaders they tie it to the lid lock and the wiring of its switch. First make sure nothing's stuck in the door. Then pull the plug for 5 minutes. Code back after that? The lock or its wiring needs testing.

What F5 E3 means on a Whirlpool washer

Your washer won't do a thing until it's sure the door is locked. Press Start and the control tells a little lock to snap shut. On a front-loader that lock lives in the frame next to the door opening. A plastic hook on the door pokes into it. On a top-loader it's built into the top, right where the lid closes.

Then a switch inside the lock tells the control, yep, locked. If that message never shows up, the washer gives up and flashes F5 E3. Notice the code doesn't blame any one part. It only says the lock check failed.

It's worth noticing when the code appeared. Washer refused to start? Or did it finish the load and then keep the door shut? Tell the technician. It saves time.

What you'll see before the code

Usually you hear a few clicks right after Start. Silence follows, and finally the code. Some machines get partway into the wash and quit. Others run the whole load and leave the door locked at the end with the code blinking.

Water in the drum doesn't change the meaning. The fault just happened to show up after the fill.

Two things Whirlpool says to try first

Start with the door or the lid. Open it, then shut it good and firm. Run a finger along the seal for a sleeve or a sock. Brand new washer? Look for leftover packing stuff near the latch. Whirlpool's front-load page mentions both.

Safety first

Then reset the control. Next, the reset. Unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then plug the cord in again. Start a cycle. Whirlpool literally compares this to rebooting a computer, and for a glitch it sometimes works.

If the door is locked with clothes inside, don't pry it. The latch hook is plastic on many models and it snaps. A broken hook turns a lock problem into a door problem.

Why the code keeps coming back

When F5 E3 survives a reset, something in the lock circuit really is failing. We usually find one of four things.

The latch hook on the door wears or cracks, especially on front-loaders where kids hang on the open door or it gets slammed shut. A hook that doesn't reach far enough never trips the lock switch.

The lock assembly itself gives out. Inside it there's a tiny motor or solenoid plus the switch, and either one can quit.

Wiring is the third suspect. On top-loaders the harness to the lid lock flexes every time the lid opens, and Whirlpool's own top-load video points to switch wiring as a cause. A pin that backs out of its plug gives the same code as a dead lock.

We leave the control board for the end. It can fail, but replacing it before testing the lock and the wires is the expensive way to guess.

How we track it down

We start by looking at the hook and the strike with the door open. A worn or cracked hook is easy to spot, and so is a door that sags on its hinge and misses the slot.

Next the lock gets tested with a meter. We check that the control actually sends power to it when you press Start, and that the switch inside reports back when it locks. Then we follow the harness between the lock and the board, plug by plug.

We've been called to Whirlpool washers where earlier repairs hadn't cleared the code. Guessing at parts is how that happens, so we test before we order anything.

Can you keep running loads?

Usually you can't. A washer that can't confirm the lock won't run, and that's on purpose, since a door that opens during spin is dangerous. If it does run now and then between codes, it will most likely get worse, not better.

Please don't tape down the lid switch to squeeze out one more load. Don't force the latch either. Water stuck inside? Call us and we'll get the door open without breaking anything.

Keeping the lock healthy

Push the door shut. Don't slam it. Kids love hanging on an open front-load door, and the hinge hates it. On a top-loader, keep baskets and detergent bottles off the lid so it closes flat.

Packing the drum so tight that the door has to be forced is hard on the hook as well. A slightly smaller load costs you nothing and saves the latch.

Questions people ask

What does F5 E3 mean on a Whirlpool washer?

It's a door lock error. Whirlpool's help pages describe it as a door that isn't locking properly on front-loaders, and as a lid lock or switch wiring fault on top-loaders.

How can I clear F5E3 on my Whirlpool washer?

Unplug the washer for 5 minutes, then reconnect it and run a new cycle. Before that, make sure the door or lid closes fully and nothing is caught in the latch. If the code returns, the lock needs testing.

Is F5E3 the same on top load and front load Whirlpool washers?

Both point to the lock. On a front-loader it's the door lock in the frame and the hook on the door. On a top-loader it's the lid lock and the wiring of its switch.

My Whirlpool washer door is stuck locked with F5 E3. What now?

Try the 5 minute unplug first. Don't pry the door, because the latch hook breaks easily. If it stays locked, especially with water inside, call a technician.

Can I fix F5E3 myself?

You can check the door and run the reset. Testing the lock and the wiring takes a meter and taking panels off, so that part is better left to a technician.

What is the difference between F5E2 and F5E3?

Whirlpool files both under door lock problems, and its help pages give each code its own steps. Your owner's manual lists what the codes mean on your exact model.
