Commercial Freezer Repair for Restaurants and Stores
Product going soft at 10°F, or frost packed on the coil? Phone us with the temperature and we fit a visit around your hours.
With commercial freezer repair you're racing the clock on your inventory. Portioned chicken and tubs of ice cream mix are money sitting on a shelf, and they start losing it as soon as they go soft. Once the evaporator fan quits, a box that should hold 0°F can blow past 10 by mid-afternoon.
We come out from Parma for this. Mostly it's reach-ins and undercounter units on restaurant lines, but we get called to chest freezers and glass-door freezers out on a store floor too.
The first hour after a freezer warms up
Before you call anyone, go check the breaker. Kitchen circuits trip more than people think, and a freezer that went dead quiet may just need the switch flipped back.
Still warm? Start moving product. Whatever's still hard goes into another freezer, packed tight, because a full box holds cold much longer than a half-empty one. Then jot down the number on the display and what the unit sounds like when it tries to kick on. We'll ask about both.
And leave the ice on the coil alone. I know it's tempting. Those fins bend if you look at them wrong, and one poke with a knife turns a cheap fix into a refrigerant leak.
Grab a cheap dial thermometer and leave it on the middle shelf. The display only knows what its probe tells it, and probes die.
Two kinds of freezer trouble
Too much ice
Some frost is fine. When it's thick enough to scrape off with a fingernail, either damp air is leaking in or the defrost gave up.
Defrost heater or timer
These freezers melt their own coil a few times a day. Heater or timer dies, and the ice just keeps stacking up until no air gets through.
Gasket and door closer
A split gasket lets the kitchen's humidity in. So does a door that doesn't swing back shut on its own. All that moisture turns to ice on the first cold thing it touches.
Not cold enough
Evaporator fan motor
Open the door and listen for a second. Compressor humming, fan inside silent? That's often your motor.
Condenser in a hot kitchen
Put an undercounter freezer next to the grill and it breathes hot air all shift. The condenser can't dump heat, so the box keeps creeping up.
Start relay or compressor
Clicking every few minutes, but it never actually runs? The compressor isn't starting. If it's the relay, that's a small part. If it's the compressor itself, we sit down and talk numbers.
Repair or replace a commercial freezer
Fan motors and defrost parts? On most commercial freezers those are middle-of-the-road repairs. Gaskets and door closers come in under that.
A dead compressor or a leak in the sealed system of an older box is a different conversation. It can get close to what a new freezer costs, and you hear that figure before we start.
You make the call with the diagnosis in front of you. Anything we repair stays under warranty for 90 days.
Chest and glass-door freezers in stores
Store freezers tend to sit by the front door, so every customer lets in a puff of warm air. Glass-door models also have little heaters in the frame that keep the glass from fogging. If one of those goes, the door clouds over and nobody can see what you're selling.
Ice cream chest freezers are simpler. The catch is the condenser, which usually sits down low behind a skinny grille that vacuums up floor dust. Clean that grille once a month. Your compressor will last longer for it.
Freezers we work on
- Reach-in freezers
- Undercounter freezers
- Chest freezers
- Glass-door freezers
- Two-section reach-ins
A two-section unit with a warm cooler half belongs on our commercial refrigerator repair page. Grill or oven next to the freezer giving you trouble as well? That's commercial oven and range repair.
Everything else we fix for businesses is listed under commercial appliance repair. Undercounter freezers on a cooking line take the worst of it. Griddle heat rolls right into a grille at knee height, and cooks kick the drawers shut all night long. We find a lot of drawer gaskets knocked out of their track.

Commercial freezer questions
Ice on the coil, a freezer that never stops and what to do first.
(216) 352-3935Can I find a commercial freezer technician near me?
If you're within about 50 miles of Parma, yes. Our technicians cover seven counties, from Lorain County in the west to Portage and Geauga in the east.
Why is my commercial freezer not freezing?
Most often the evaporator fan has stopped or the coil is buried in ice. A clogged condenser does it too, especially in a hot kitchen. Check the breaker first, then call with the display reading.
Do you repair ice cream freezers?
Yes. Chest freezers for packaged ice cream and dipping cabinets with glass lids are both on our list. Ice cream wants a colder setting than most frozen food, so tell us what you keep in it.
How cold should a commercial freezer be?
0°F or colder is the usual target for frozen food. Plenty of kitchens set reach-ins a few degrees below zero to cover the door openings.
Why is there ice on the back wall of my reach-in freezer?
Usually the defrost heater or its timer has failed, so frost keeps building. A worn gasket feeds it with humid kitchen air. We test the defrost circuit first.
How long does product last in a freezer that stopped?
USDA guidance says a full freezer kept shut holds a safe temperature for about 48 hours, a half full one for about 24. Every opening cuts that down, so plan where the product goes before you open the door.
Can a glass-door freezer that keeps fogging be fixed?
Yes. A heater in the door frame or the switch that runs it is usually behind it. We test that circuit and replace whatever failed.
What does a loud noise from a reach-in freezer mean?
A rattle that comes and goes is often the fan blade touching ice. A heavy hum with no cooling means the compressor is struggling to start. Note when it happens and tell us on the phone.
Is same-day reach-in freezer repair possible?
Early calls often get a same-day visit. Whether the repair finishes on that visit depends on the part.
Why does my commercial freezer run nonstop?
It's working hard to get rid of heat. A dirty condenser is the usual reason, and a door that doesn't seal adds to it. A low refrigerant charge does the same, and that one needs a technician.
Is it worth fixing a freezer door that won’t shut on its own?
Yes. A new gasket or a door closer is a small repair compared with the ice and wasted power a gap causes.
