LG front-load washer on a pedestal

An all-in-one is basically a front-load washer with a dryer squeezed into the same cabinet. There's no vent going outside, so it dries clothes a whole different way than the dryer you'd find in most basements. You want someone who knows both halves of it.

We repair washer dryer combos in apartments and condos around Parma and Cleveland. Houses without room for a separate pair often have one too.

They've got their own quirks, too. The drum has to cool off before the door will unlock, and the drying side relies on parts you can't see from the front. So before we pull a panel, we'll ask how long the last cycle ran and whether the clothes came out hot or cool.

How an all-in-one dries without a vent

Older combos are condenser models. They heat up the air in the drum and then trickle cold water through a chamber in the back, which pulls the moisture out. That's the reason the cold faucet keeps running while it dries. It's also why lint ends up in the drain pump.

A lot of the newer ones use a heat pump instead. It's easier on your clothes and uses less electricity. On the other hand, there's now a small sealed system with its own filter you've got to keep clean.

A combo can only dry about half of what it washes. So go ahead and fill it for the wash, then pull a few towels out before the drying starts.

Where combo washer dryers fail

Clothes come out damp

When clothes come out damp, it's more often airflow or the condenser water than the heater itself.

Lint in the condenser

Lint packs into the spot the cold water's supposed to rinse. Airflow drops off, and the dry cycle drags on for hours.

Condenser water valve

No cold water getting to the condenser means the moisture's got nowhere to go. You'll pull out laundry that's hot and still wet.

Heater or thermostat

Clothes cool and damp after a full dry cycle? That points to the heater, or a safety thermostat that's opened up.

Washing side

Drain pump filter

On a combo every load sends lint to the pump. Clean the filter behind the lower front panel once a month.

Door lock

The door stays locked through both halves of the program. A failing lock can stop it between wash and dry.

Bearings and dampers

Spin works like any front-loader. A roar at high speed or a knocking drum means worn bearings or dampers.

Separate machines have their own pages, washer repair and dryer repair.

Checks that often fix slow drying

  1. Clean both filtersEmpty the drain pump filter down at the front. Then look for a lint screen on the door or inside the drum.
  2. Open the cold tap fullyCondenser models need cold water for the whole dry cycle. A valve left half open means a slow dry.
  3. Go easy on detergentStick with HE detergent and use less than the cap says. Too many suds slow the drain down and throw off the moisture sensor.

A separate vented dryer leaving clothes damp is another story, covered in our article on wet clothes after a dry cycle.

Error codes and long cycles

A combo flashes a code when one stage runs past its time limit. Long drying is normal on many models, so we compare your cycle with the manual before blaming any part.

Write down the code and the stage it appeared in. That shortens the test list before we arrive.

Musty smells and leftover water

Combos stay damp inside longer than a regular washer, since the drum heats and cools in the same sealed space. After the last load, leave the door open and wipe the rubber boot dry.

Fix the combo or switch to a pair

Worth repairing

Pumps and door locks are standard washer parts. Water valves and thermostats are too, and most combos take them.

Think it over

A failed heat pump system or a control board in an aging combo can make the repair cost more than the combo is worth. If your space can fit a stacked pair, we lay out both options before any charge.

Slow drying, codes and cycle times.

Why is my washer dryer combo not drying?

Clean the drain pump filter first and make sure the cold water tap is open all the way. Then dry a smaller load. If clothes still come out wet, the condenser or the heater needs testing.

How long should a combo washer dryer take?

Much longer than a vented dryer. A full wash and dry often runs several hours. A cycle that never ends or leaves clothes soaked is a fault.

Do you repair LG washer dryer combos?

Yes. LG all-in-ones are part of our regular work, as are GE models and the other brands on our list.

Why does my combo use water while drying?

Condenser models run cold water through the back of the drum to pull moisture from the air. A little water use during drying is normal on those.

Why does my all-in-one stop between washing and drying?

Usually the drain did not finish or the door lock lost its signal. Check the pump filter, note any code and call us.

Should I repair or replace a combo washer dryer?

Repair it for pumps and locks. Valves and thermostats are fair repairs too. A dead heat pump or main board in an aging machine can make a new combo the better buy. We say so before any work.
